Cowboys Shooting Too Much For Mustangs

Silver City, N.M.- Offensive shooting and assists is what helped New Mexico Highlands charge past the Western New Mexico University men’s basketball team for the win, 91-71, last Friday night during Senior Night.

The Cowboys (15-13, 14-8 RMAC) were able to convert on nearly half of their shots shooting 31-63 (49) and able to take in 16 assists. While the Mustangs were held 21-72 (29) in shooting and held up short to 8 assists.

After WNMU’s Adam Kesler started the game with a bucket from beyond the arc, NMHU got hot and went a 14-0 run making the score 14-3.

It was all Cowboys in the first half as they kept the lead in double digits throughout the game.

Finally down the stretch of the first half, the Mustang were able to come within ten, 44-34, after Makhtar Fall converted on a layup and a Emery Rang three pointer.

But this was close as WNMU could get as they trailed at half 49-37.

Momentum carried with NMHU into the second half as they kept their lead at 14 points.

Brandon Williams for the Mustangs snapped the deficit to put them within 11 when drilling a three pointer with 4:45 left in the game to make the score 77-66.

The Cowboys would not panic as they maintained their lead in double digits and go on to take the win, 91-71.

Overall, NMHU hit 11-31 (35) in three pointers while WNMU shot 6-29 (20).

Emery Range led the way in shooting for the Mustangs coming away with 21 points followed by Willie McCray with 14. It was the last game as a Mustang for Fall and Kesler. Fall went for nine points, five rebounds, a block, and a steal while Kesler took in nine points.

The Western New Mexico University men’s basketball finished the season with an overall record 1-26 (1-21 RMAC).
