Homecoming 2016: Mustang Club of the Week: The Outdoor and Search and Rescue Programs

Silver City, NM – The Outdoor Program and The Grant County Search and Rescue Program attended Western New Mexico University’s tailgate last Saturday.

Run by WNMU, the Outdoor Program allows students to roam and visit such locations as the Gila National Forest, Carlsbad Caverns, and the Grand Canyon. Founded in 2012, the program is intended to increase “ecological and social literacy among participating students.”

Some students may have already been involved with the program since it is now a requirement in Freshman Orientation. The program also provides gear to students and the public for free. Activities of the Outdoor Program include horseback riding, rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, scuba diving, backpacking, snowboarding, and skiing. Also, it is a minor as well.

A new edition to the Outdoor Program is the Grant County Search and Rescue Program, a volunteer program in Grant County that was founded in 1978. The non-profit organization is “dedicated to training and willing to use our own personal resources to aid or rescue missing person(s) from the back country and mountains of New Mexico”.

“It offers experience as well as hiking but with a greater purpose”, said WNMU junior student Jeffery Arrington who is the President of the program. Arrington, is also currently majoring in Nursing went on to say, “It is a great public service and is cool to be part of.”
