Homecoming 2016: The Return of the Queen

Silver City NM- Yesterday brought a flood of alumni out from the wood works in order to celebrate WNMU’s Homecoming 2016. Among the ranks was a former coach, a former Mustang Newspaper manager, and a past Homecoming Queen.

Thirty years ago, Monica Carbajal-Alatorre was crowned the 1986 Homecoming queen. She was a Junior at the time, and claimed to be just as happy then as she is today. She is also just as fit, as the outfit she wore Saturday, a maroon dress suit sewn by her mother, was in fact the same outfit that she wore for Homecoming court thirty years ago. Dr. Carbajol-Alatorre was also inducted to their School of Education’s Hall of Fame two years later.dscn1633

She graduated from WNMU with honors and a Triple Major in 1987, continuing forward to get a Masters Degree and finally a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology. She currently resides in Los Angeles, California where she is a professor at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising as well as a consultant for Franklin Covey.

When asked what she misses most about Silver City she said, “My family is here, so I miss them and also the clean fresh air.”

She also says she plans to retire in Silver City with her husband in the next 20 years. She was also on hand to crown Alicia Soliz as the 2016 Homecoming Queen.
