Lady Mustangs Drop Four Games Against Rambelles

Silver City, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University softball team were in action this past weekend as they faced #21 ranked Angelo State University but failed to pick up a win in a four-game series at home.

The Rambelles came out the gates hot in the first game as they earned 12 runs in the first inning. It was not until the third inning when WNMU scored two runs; senior Lacy Granger singled to score senior Linzy Granger then an ASU fielding error brought in sophomore Ariana Maldonado, making the score 12-2.

Adding five runs in the fourth and fifth inning, Angelo State University would go on for the victory, 22-2.

While three Mustangs came away with one hit-game, Linzy Granger led the team with two hits. In the circle, freshman Lyana Waddell (0-5) pitched 0.2 innings, allowed two hits, and two earned runs.

The second game was a different story than the first as neither teams were unable to score until the fifth inning. Here, the Rambelles put up the first run of the game then brought in two more in the sixth.

WNMU answered back in the bottom of inning as Linzy Granger homered to put them within two, 3-1. This was close as they can get as Western could not produce a run in the seventh, giving ASU the win.

Linzy Granger and four other Mustangs contributed one hit each. In the pitching game, Domi Shone (0-7) threw for all seven innings as she gave up seven hits and struck out six.

It was an offensive battle in the third game as both teams found 11 hits each. ASU snagged the first two points of the game in the first inning. WNMU earned these two runs back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Lacy Granger and a fielding error which scored junior Mariangela Garcia, tying the game 2-2.

The Rambelles offense did not let up as they pulled in one run in the second, five in the third, and two in the fourth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Western put two runs on the board after Garcia doubled to score Lacy Granger and sophomore Ariana Maldonado, making the score 10-4.

In the sixth inning, ASU contributed one more run. WNMU’s last two runs came in the bottom of the sixth but this would not be enough as Angelo State claimed the victory, 11-6.

Garcia had an outstanding game as she went 4 for 4 at the plate while junior Valeria Luna followed with two hits. Wadell (0-6) was the starter on the mound and pitched 2.1 innings while permitting eight runs.

In the final game, the Rambelles went on the board first as they picked up a run in the second inning, three runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.

Lacy Granger for the Mustangs came up big as she drilled a ball over the left field fence for a three-run RBI, making the score 5-3.

Angelo State stacked on two runs in the seventh and would eventually bring in the win, 7-3.

Junior Aryana Gutierrez led with two hits while Lacy Granger and Garcia followed with one. Domi Shone (0-8) tossed the entire game, giving up nine hits and striking three.

WNMU softball will be on the road next weekend as they travel to Texas
Woman’s University this Saturday for a four-game series.
