Magic Club Offers Outlet For Students to Relieve Stress

Do you wonder who all those people are by the Mustang deli playing cards everyday? It is probably Western New Mexico University’s Magic club! The WNMU Magic Club has been going on for approximately two years. The club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from Twelve until everyone is done playing, as well as on Saturdays from four o’clock till six o’clock.

The club has about fifteen members plus a few community members and they play the game Magic the Gathering which is a trading card game where the object is to bring the life points down to zero of magicians. If a player can’t draw cards anymore they lose. The Magic club also plays tournaments at Alotta Gelato for prizes.

Club Member Harvey Ledesma said “ The reason I think this club is beneficial to Western is because a lot of people have told me that they haven’t found people that have the same interest in playing Magic. So they like that there is a group at WNMU that plays. People also get random interest from seeing us play by the deli. People that like board games and card games can get interested.”

Western New Mexico University student Miguel Andazola said “I found out about the club when one of my friends picked me up from work and got me introduced to it. I also was curious on what they were doing in the deli when I would walk past them. I really enjoy playing it.” Harvey Ledesma then added “ I was trying to start a club and the president of the Magic club invited me to play and I took an interest. I started playing and buying the cards. The game is kind of similar to Pokemon but much more of a mature game. I like that they have this club because it helps bring people with the same interests together. It also releases stress from class. The club is not bias, anyone can play. The magic club meets in front of the Deli on the third floor of the Student Memorial Building. Anyone is welcome to participate and play.
