Mustangs share their favorite sibling memories to celebrate National Siblings Day

National Siblings Day is on April 10 every year. This day is to honor our brothers and sisters. Siblings can be our best friends or our worst enemies. They can be many things like our biggest competition, most substantial encouragement, or the reminder of our most embarrassing moments. According to the National Holidays Calendar website, Claudia Evart founded National Siblings Day in 1995. After losing her two siblings early in life, she knew how essential siblings could be in our lives. Evart selected April 10 in honor of her late sister’s birthday. How can we celebrate National Siblings Day? You can spend some time with your sibling(s). Enjoy looking at photos and videos of time spent with your sibling(s). To celebrate brothers and sisters, the Mustang Newspaper asked WNMU students these questions, “How many siblings do you have in your family? What is your favorite part of being a sibling? What is your favorite memory with your siblings?”

Jordan Moore is majoring in Elementary Education. “I have two siblings, an older sister, Adriana, and a little brother, Jaden. Having an understanding that all of us went through the same struggles growing up is something I am so thankful for. I am not sure how I would deal with my parents without them. Plus, the forced friendship was nice. My favorite memory with my siblings was those late-night drives to Sonic. There isn’t much else you can do in this town, but just cruising with them is something I’ll never forget,” said Moore.

Brenda Hernandez is the current Vice President for ASWNMU. Hernandez responded, “I have one sibling. She is my fraternal twin, and her name is Mariana. She is a flight attendant. My favorite part of being a sibling is that we share a bond that is hard to explain. We can always pick up right where we left off after not seeing her for months. Although we are far from each other, we are as close as we can be. My favorite memory is us going to Cancun this past December. We went snorkeling for the first time! We would hold each other’s hands, and we kept swimming and swimming until we realized we were very far from shore. It was amazing what we both saw underwater! I love and miss my other half a lot!”

Vielka Felix is a Resident Assistant for Housing & Residence Life. She said, “I have two siblings, Ubiel and Vanessa. My favorite part of being a sibling is that we count on each other. My favorite memory with my siblings was when we went to a national competition for Track and Field. My brother and I were going to perform the hurdles, and my sister was going to perform the high jump, so we were nervous and anxious about it, but in the end, we killed it! What I liked about this experience was that we were supporting each other and sharing advice on how to do our best, and I was feeling fearless because we were going through the same experience together.”

Abigail Cushman is majoring in Nursing. Cushman said, “I have three older siblings, a brother, and two sisters. My favorite part of being a sibling is having long friends that I can trust 100% and know they will always be there. I have a lot of favorite memories with my siblings, but I think my favorite is when we were all still at home, and we would go on drives on dirt roads in my brother’s old pickup truck. It was a single cab, so we would all have to squish together, but we had lots of fun! It was a way for us all to bond even though it was doing something simple.”

I am a sibling of six in my family. From youngest to oldest, there is Monique, Brandon, Andres, me, Andrea, and Alma. We are a big family! My favorite part of being a sibling is that I never have boring moments. My parents have taught us that we should always maintain united no matter what. Being from a large family, I appreciate the little things. My siblings made me who I am today. My older sisters always encouraged me to do better and my younger siblings taught me patience and the nurturing side of me.  My favorite memory with my siblings is one where we took a vacation to the beach. We made a sand castle all together. We also buried my sisters body in the sand and made the sand shaped as a mermaid! It was super fun! My siblings are my past, my present, and my future.
