Opening of the Annual Student Art Exhibition

Silver City, NM- Friday, February 27, Western New Mexico University’s Expressive Arts Department had their annual juried student art exhibition opening at the McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art. WNMU student, Junchen Huang, said “The painting I won an award for took me about three days. It was totally a surprise that I won an award. Having my work in the show was important because it exposes my work to the public and that’s important as an artist.”

Local businesses and individuals donated gifts to the winning artists. The businesses and that donated gifts include Everything Under the Sky, Hang’Em High Fine Art Picture Framing, Jalisco’s Mexican Restaurant, Judith Meyer, The Jumping Cactus, L&I Art Supplies, Mimbres Regional Arts Council, Molly Ramolla Art Gallery, Raven’s Nest Shop, Silver City Museum Store, Silver City Food Co-Op, The Pink Store, WNMU Museum Store, and the WNMU Book Store.

Gallery director and WNMU faculty member, John Abbott said” It was a great show and there was a good turnout of people. I hope more students submit work next year.”
WNMU BFA student Jenny Castanon was also one of the students that won an award she said, “I was happy and surprised I won the award there were lots of entries. It took me a couple of days to paint this painting and it was also my first abstract painting.
