President’s Chamber Music Series: La Catrina String Quartet

Silver City, NM- The final performance from the President’s Chamber of Music Series was La Catrina String Quartet on March 21st at Light Hall theater. Comprised of four musicians, this group strives to incorporate those Latin-American artists whose work may not be so widely heard as it should be along with being know as a contemporary group. Even though all of the members hail from outside of the U.S., they still find a great way to merge multiple cultural backgrounds into their shows, and that brings their appeal to a variety of audiences.
The members in La Catrina are: Daniel Vega-Albela and Simón Gollo on violin, Jorge Martinez-Ríos on viola, and Jorge Espinoza with the violoncello. With many impressive awards and titles to each of their individual names, La Catrina dazzled the crowd at WNMU with quite a set list and the special guest of Willy Sucre from the New Mexico Philharmonic.
In the first half of the show, they began with “Gavota,” by Manuel Ponce, then moved into “Fuga y Misterio,” by Ástor Piazzolla, and then “Milonga de la Anunciación,” also by Piazzolla. For the second half, La Catrina played “Payadora,” by Julián Plaza, “Cuartito Azul,” by Mariano Mores, and finally the “String Quintet No.2 in B flat Major OP.87,” by Felix Mendelssohn for their grand finale.
This event was sponsored by Edwards Jones Investments, WILL, and the WNMU office of Cultural Affairs.
The next performance will be a special one on March 24 at the FACT theater at 7 P.M. of Jesús Muñoz flamenco, “Red Note.” It is $15 per person and free for all children, WNMU students, faculty and staff with a Mustang ID.
