Softball Player Breanna Aker Joins Student Government

Silver City, NM- The Associated Students of Western New Mexico University (ASWNMU) have recently welcomed three new senators into their ranks, including one Breanna Aker, who will be representing District 4, the School of Business.

Bre is a junior, hailing from Sunshine, Arizona and graduated from Apollo High School in Glendale, Arizona in 2013. Currently, she is in the Occupational Therapist Assistant Program working towards a Bachelors Degree in Rehabilitation.

She also comes from a long line of Mustangs. Not only did her grandfather attend WNMU back in 1978, but both of her parents are also alumni, meeting at WNMU and eventually graduating with Bachelors Degrees in Education. They have been married for 21 years.

This, along with WNMU’s softball team, is what brought Bre to the University. Bre has loved to play softball, claiming to be around the game her whole life. It was while she was playing as a pitcher, later in the outfield, for the WNMU softball team that one of Bre’s teammates informed her about the opening in Student Government.

“This semester they were short senators and my teammate and friend Samantha Munoz recommended me to be appointed as a Senator,” Bre said. “I have always been interested in student involvement on campus and making changes to better the education and student life for WNMU.”

Since being appointed to the position on January 20, 2016, Bre has already started getting herself familiar with the School of Business and looks forward to working with Dr. Chavez and the business students in finding out what can be done to give the students the proper support and equipment to thrive.

After graduating, Bre hopes to launch a career as an OTA, preferably in California or Arizona.

The ASWNMU will be holding a public meeting this Wednesday on February 3 at 9am in the Miller Memorial Library. Students are welcome to attend. The Mustang will keep the student body up-to-date on any upcoming events or developments regarding student government.
