Student Social Work Association Raises Money for Extended University

Silver City, NM – During the tailgate prior to the Homecoming game on Saturday October 10, the Student Social Work Association held a booth selling soda, water, fruit bowls, and free face-painting in order to raise funds for their club.

Albert Placencio, a WNMU student and President of the Student Social Work Association, told the Mustang that the goal for their fund raising was to make enough money to help off-site extended university students come to the Silver City campus and participate in events on main campus and help them feel included. Placencio took some classes at the WNMU branch in Deming, where several Social Work members are located and said that it was easy to see their frustration about feeling excluded.

The Student Social Work Association teamed up with students from the Cobre Heights Key Club to fundraise at Homecoming. Their main goal right now is to be able to get as many extended university students as possible to Silver City in order to participate in Great Race next spring.

Other events that the group have coming up are raising funds for a conference in Albuquerque that helps students get their CEU (continuing education unit) or their CEC (continuing education credit). They also have an event planned that is going to revolve around social media and getting everybody in the club to host an event at the same time and share it online.

Placencio hopes that all of this will bring a sense of unity to the students from all of WNMU, especially those who are not in Silver City.
