Student Government holds public meeting, passes bills

The Associated Students of Western New Mexico University held a public meeting on Wednesday, October 2 in the Student Memorial Center.

During the meeting, Darlene Chavez, the Student Government President, discussed the retreat Student Government held and how they worked on a unique mission statement that the current ASWNMU members created.

ASWNMU Vice-President, Brenda Hernandez, presented Student Government’s new plan to increase the awareness of Student Government. She mentioned that they will have activities in partnership with Student Life.

Kianna Garcia, District VI Senator, shared the upcoming events for Early Childhood:

  • Open House at Child Development Center & Growing Tree: October 9, from 4:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Red Hot Childrens Fiesta at Penny Park: October 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Halloween Walk – Candy Give out at Growing Tree: October 31.

District 10 Senator, Francisco Estrella, is aiming to obtain new locations for students to use. He is also in communication with Abe Villarreal, Assistant Dean of Student Support, to provide reusable water bottles for students.

Richard Mubanga, Senator IV, invited students to keep an eye on an upcoming event for Breast Cancer Awareness later this month.

Gateway Community Coordinator, Nicole Karem, invites students to join a student-oriented hike on October 13. Meet point is at the School of Nursing Building.

Darlene Chavez, invited everyone to the Noche Ranchera Event, free to all students. Mariachi Plata will be performing along with other Mariachi groups from the area. The event will be Friday, October 4 starting at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting ended with a shout out by Francisco Estrella to The Mustang Newspaper.

ASNWMU hosts public meetings at 8:00a .m. every other Wednesday in the Student Memorial Center.
