Student Government Members Present New Initiatives and Report on Upcoming Events

The Associated Students of Western New Mexico University (ASWNMU) held a public meeting on Wednesday, October 16 in the Miller Library. Several student senators reported on ongoing developments in their districts.

District Senator 3, Brenda Dominguez, discussed that the head of the Natural Sciences department is currently in Chihuahua, Mexico, recruiting students for the Natural Sciences.

Fernando Martinez, District 1 Senator, will be helping with the decoration of this year’s Haunted House. The Haunted House will take place in Parotti Hall from October 31 to November 2. Admission si $5 per student.

Randy Rodriguez, District 7 Senator, is looking for WNMU supplies to hand out in his district.

District 9 senator Eduardo Trevizo is planning to meet with the director of online learning to set up surveys to raise awareness and have feedback about ASWNMU.

District 10 senator Francisco Estrella will be meeting with Dr. Jack Crocker, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, to discuss new possible locations for students. He has also been working on purchasing water bottles to distribute to students with the goal of promoting ASWNMU.

Kianna Garcia from District 6 passed a bill for Halloween Walk. This bill includes ASWNMU having a table with candy for the kids from the Early Childhood program on Halloween.

ASWNMU Vice President Brenda Hernandez and Estrella have been working extensively on raising awareness for ASWNMU. They have created a Instagram page for ASWNMU.

ASWNMU will be hosting an Archery Tag tournament on November 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the IM Gym in partnership with the Department of Student Life. Prizes will be given out to participants.

Elaine Howard, Lab Site Program Administrator for the Child Development Center, shared that they are currently being funded for 60, 4-year old children; however, they are not filling out the classrooms. Anyone in the community or students who would be interested in having a place for their 4-year old in this free program please contact the Child Development Center at 575-538-6344.

ASWNMU public meeting are streamed live on www.facebook.com/aswnmu/. They meet every other Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.
