‘Taste of Brazil’ Begins Carnival Celebration

Silver City, NM- Feb. 17, Western New Mexico University held its first “Taste of Brazil” lunch. University students, staff, as well as multiple community members enjoyed a variety of delicious Brazilian dishes. Among the students enjoying the lunch was Miles Parscal, a History major at WNMU and also a staff member at Sodexo, he said “ We have a lot of transfer students from Brazil and it is important for the school to embrace their culture because they have learned so much about American culture.” Another Western student, Jordan Summers stated, “The food was very delicious, I really enjoyed the Brazilian Chicken Pot Pie and also that Western [host] these events.”

The “Taste of Brazil” event was organized by Western students, the International studies office and the staff members at Sodexo (WNMU’s cafeteria). Alexander Neves, Assistant Professor of Billingual Education, said “The Taste of Brazil event was part of the Carnival week celebration that is going on right now in Brazil, we wanted the students to get a taste of the popular food in brazil and also a taste of celebration for Carnival.” Western students, Shelby Wilkie and Dulce Ochoa added,“The food was definitely very good and we liked the educational aspect of learning about the different foods and Brazilian culture.”

On Feb. 18 as part of the Carnival Celebration there will be a Brazilian Hangout at 7 pm at the Center of Gender Equity, anyone is invited to participate. Then on Saturday Feb. 21, at 9 pm, Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery, is hosting the Carnival Latino, there will be music by the band Baracutanga, and free samba lessons from Alexandra Moreira Neves. The event is for all ages. There is a seven dollar admission to the Carnival Latino but students get a discount if they bring their WNMU student ID.
