Three Mustangs Shoot in Double Digits but Fall to Angelo State

Silver City, N.M. – Despite an impressive shooting night from a few Mustang players, the Western New Mexico University men’s basketball team fell short to Angelo State University, 61-97, Thursday night.

In the away loss, three WNMU players hit double-digit scoring; sophomore Jordan Enriquez and junior Latrell Spivey with 13 points and senior Emery Range with 11. In field goal shooting, Enriquez went 5-12, Latrell 5-8 and Range 4-12. Latrell nearly posted a double-double as he came away with nine rebounds. Sophomore Willie McCray found seven points and two assists.

On the Ram’s side, Quay King had a breakout game with 28 points while Thomas Tshikaya followed next with 14. Lorenzo Dillard assisted nine times while Brandon Williams posted eight rebounds.

As a team, Mustangs hit 34 percent (22-63) from the floor and 24 percent (6-25) from the threes. Angelo State had no problem in the shooting game as they shot 53 percent (32-60) in field goals and 60 percent (14-23) in three pointers. ASU held the edge in bench points, 27 to 13, and points in paint, 32 to 28.

WNMU holds an overall record of 2-14 and are winless in the Lone Star Conference with a 0-8 record. The last time Western attained a win came back on Dec. 30 after defeating Benedictine University, 67-59. Since then, Mustangs have been riding a four game losing streak.

The next challenge WNMU faces is Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Texas stands on a 9-7 overall record and are 2-5 in the Lone Star Conference. In their most recent game, the Javelinas defeated Eastern New Mexico University, 72-64.

Mustangs will hit the road this Saturday as they match up against the Javelinas. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. Central Time.
