WNMU Hosts Academic and Research Symposium

Silver City, NM- On Thursday November 30, the J. Cloyd Miller Library was packed with tables, posters, students, and guest speakers who displayed their hard-achieved academic research. The Symposium works as a form of mutual teaching and learning via posters and oral presentations being offered in separate conference rooms. This event usually serves as the final grade for many student’s classes including public speaking and psychology.20171130_122540

One of the oral presentations was a graded project for Dr. Benjamin Cline’s public speaking class titled “Dodgeball for a Cause.” Group members Johnathan Molija, John Gallegos, Ariana Ortiz, and Kaitlyn Rutherford, hosted a Dodgeball charity game for local non-profit organization, The Gospel Mission. Volunteers could participate in the game if they donated a can of food.

“We really can make a huge impact to people and their lives because we now learned how to persuade and speak to people,” said team member, Jonathan Molija showed his appreciation of learning persuasive skills from the class in order to complete his team work.

Another presentation was also a graded project for Dr. Jennifer Johnston’s Developmental Psychology class titled “Postpartum Depression and its Effects on Infants.” Group members Jamie Crockett, Sierra Robinson, Felicia Loya, and Diana Hart, picked the topic and decided how to present it. Postpartum depression, often abbreviated as PPD, is the long term depression a mother gets after giving birth that overextends the average anxiety.

“Our team leader Jamie works as a midwife and was interested in the early symptoms of PPD,” said team member Sierra Robinson. The presentation was presented as a poster among many other colorful displays.

Also happening that day, WNMU career services hosted a career fair, where numerous local businesses in the Grant County area set up booths in the area in an effort to meet with and recruit students for job opportunities in the area.
