On February 18, nursing professor Abbey Carpenter had one of her first book signings on campus at the
Miller Library.
The Tortilla Star is a contemporary fiction book that tells the story of an English teacher that helps
immigrant children arriving in the country as a volunteer. Carpenter used her own experience as a
volunteer at an immigration center to help bring more realism to her book. When the author first began
her journey to write this book, she wanted to create a book that would help people in understanding
one another.
When asking the purpose behind her book, Carpenter responded, ” I’m trying to believe in the goodness
of people in these polarizing times. I hope that my book helps people see outside themselves.”. Over
five years of writing have been put into this book and several others of editing and publishing. Silver City
was only one of the first book signing stops to make her book known over the next couple of months.
There are several others in different states planned.
Carpenter has another book in the process that she hopes to finish and publish in the next year. Her next
work is the story of a woman that decides to leave her family in search of a more fulfilling life. The story
takes place in the 1960s.
Miller Library has a copy on reserve for everyone to check out. The book is also available on
Amazon.com.
