Easter is a worldwide holiday and celebrated differently between cultures. Western New Mexico University is a diverse campus with students from multiple different cultures and countries; including Mexico, Spain, England, The Ukraine, The Netherlands, Brazil, France, and Germany.
Students shared what their Easter traditions are with The Mustang News. WNMU student Anna Tiurina, from The Ukraine said “My favorite part of Easter is all the food and going to church with my grandparents in the middle of the night. In the Ukraine during Easter baskets are made with food and a candle in them. The baskets are blessed Easter Morning or Holy Saturday depending on what region you are from. On Good Friday churches set up a plashchenytsia, which represents the tomb of Jesus Christ.”
Western New Mexico University Student, Heather Wasson from Silver City, New Mexico said “Usually My family gets candy and lays the candy on every inch of the living room along with our baskets and we usually have a huge lunch and dinner, pretty much equivalent of Thanksgiving. My family always makes Irene cream jello salad, that’s the traditional recipe for Easter.”
