Silver City, NM- On Saturday afternoon, the Western New Mexico Football (2-4, 1-3) team squared up against 8 seed Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (6-0, 4-0) but failed to win with the score 51-24. During the Mustang’s Homecoming game, Mitch Glasmann neared his passing yards record just shy of 44 yards.
The Orediggers received the ball first but their offense led to a three-and-out first drive. The Mustangs did not do much offensively until later in the first quarter when the only points put on the scoreboard was by Western’s kicker Josh McIntire. He connected with a 42-yard field goal with five minutes left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, it was all about Colorado School of Mine’s offense by scoring 28 points while Western could not get score any points. The only momentum for Western was when Alfonso Wilson picked off Justin Dvorak on an opening drive; however WNMU failed to score after an incomplete pass from Glasmann on 4th down. The Mustangs went only 1-for-11 in third-down conversions and could not find a way to get into the red zone at all. The Orediggers defense held the Glassman to 89 yards passing and Marques Rogers to 27 yards rushing.
The third quarter started off right for the Orediggers as they scored first with a 3-yard pass that made the score 35-3 with the time of 9:34. But the Mustangs answered back with a 62-yard pass from Glasmann to Marques Rodgers making the score 35-10. Glasmann threw another touchdown pass to Xavier Ayers for 75 yards that cut the deficit to 35-17. Towards the end of the quarter, Colorado School of Mines answered back with their own 68-yard touchdown pass making the score 41-17.
Starting off the fourth quarter, the Orediggers would open a drive with a touchdown pass, but WNMU did not go away thanks to a 75 yard touchdown pass from Michael Ball to again Ayers making the score 48-24. Colorado School of Mines kicked a 33-yard field goal at 5:26 making it the last score of the game 51-24.
Glasmann threw for a total of 365 yards, completing 31-52 completions, and 2 touchdowns. Ayers and Rodgers led the team in receiving combining for a total of 375 yards and 3 touchdowns. James Nelson and Daruis Guillory carried the team in tackles, each having 8 tackles.
Passing for the Orediggers, Justin Dvorak lead the way with 484 passing yards and 4 touchdowns with one interception. Ty Young contributed 192 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns plus Cole Spurgeon’s 128 receiving yards and one touchdown.
The Mustangs next opponent will be hosted at Colorado Mesa (5-1, 4-0) this Saturday afternoon.
