Silver City, N.M.- Colorado Mesa’s (CMU) bench points and rebounds is what helped them get the win over Western New Mexico University women’s basketball team 55-43 last Friday night. The Mavericks outgained the Mustangs in bench points 23-9 and in rebounds 47-37.
Deandra Williams jumper put WNMU up on the board with the first score of the quarter that tied the game, 2-2. Mustangs took the lead on their next score 5-3, thanks to a Jada Grady three pointer.
This lead diminished quickly when Colorado Mesa answered back with their own three pointer which also gave them the lead back 6-5.
CMU kicked things into gear and finished the quarter strong as they went on a 8-0 run with the lead 16-10.
Mavericks started off with momentum begging the second quarter as they went on a 10-3 run making the score 26-13.
With 2:12 left in the quarter, Mustangs were able to crawl their way to within 7 thanks to a My’Kale Brown jumper that made the deficit 28-21.
However Colorado Mesa came away with the lead at the end of the half 32-23.
WNMU came out hot to start the third quarter and went on 8-2 to bring the deficit to two, 34-32.
Momentum soon stopped for the Mustangs and shifted to the Mavericks who went on their own 6-1 run making their lead 40-33.
Ending the quarter with the lead was CMU, 44-37.
CMU kept things rolling in the fourth quarter and quickly brought the lead to double digits, 47-37, after converting on a three pointer.
From then on it was all Colorado Mesa. They were able to keep the lead in double digits and would eventually go on to take the win 55-43.
Overall, the Mavericks shot a 20-59 (33) clip in field goals and a 7-28 (25) in three pointers. On the other side, Mustangs shot 15-56 (26) in field goals and 2-13 (15) in three pointers.
Williams and Desiree Smith led the way with 9 points each for the Mustangs, while French brought down 7 rebounds.
WNMU (7-14, 5-11 RMAC) will be back at it again as they take on Westminster College Saturday night at home with the game beginning at 7 p.m.
