Silver City, N.M.- The Western New Mexico University Men’s basketball team squared off against the No. 7 seed Fort Lewis College (FLC) Saturday night but fell short 97-61. What helped FLC (23-3, 18-3 RMAC) push past WNMU (1-25, 1-20 RMAC) is points off turnovers with 14 and field goal shooting hitting 31-57 (54.4). The Mustangs were only to come away with 4 points off turnovers while hitting 22-69 in field goal shooting (31.9).
Mustang’s Adam Kesler came out hot in the first half when he connected on two straight three pointers which gave them a quick 6-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the Skyhawks answered back with a 8-0 run and took the lead 8-6. A few possession later, WNMU was able to snag the lead back, 12-10, when Kesler nailed a pair of free throw shots.
With the game knotted up 15-15, FLC caught momentum and went on a 11-2 run making the score 26-17.
It was all Skyhawks in the last minutes of the half, as they went into halftime with the lead 49-30.
FLC’s momentum carried into the start of the second half as they went on a 11-0 run, pushing their lead 62-30.
Finally, Willie McCray for WNMU was able to snap the drought by drilling in a three pointer making the score 62-33.
Skyhawks did not look back as they went on to take the win 97-61.
Overall, FLC hit 14-28 (50) in three pointers and 21-27 (77) in free throws. Mustangs shot 5-19 (26) from downtown while hitting 12-16 (75) in free throws.
Three Mustangs scored in double-digits: Steven Loucks (12), Jordon Enriquez (15), and Kesler (10). Carter Aby was able to dish out three assists.
The Mustangs will finish their final game of the regular season this Friday at home against New Mexico Highlands with the game beginning at 7:30 p.m.
