Silver City, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University men’s basketball were unable to pick up away wins last Thursday and Saturday after falling to Texas A&M University-Commerce, 79-112, and to Tarleton State University, 45-86.
In Thursday’s game against Texas, WNMU hit 40 percent from the floor (26-65), 30 percent from three (6-20) and 77 percent from the foul line (21-27). The Lions outshot the Mustangs hitting 58 percent in field goals (41-70) and 35 percent in threes (11-31) but fell short in free throws shooting 59 percent (19-32). Texas also held the edge in points off turnovers 31-14 and in points in the paint 58-36.
WNMU sophomore Willie McCray led the team with 14 points, while sophomore Jordan Enriquez drilled in 13 points. Junior Latrell Spivey added another double-double to his resume as he hit 12 points and brought in 12 rebounds.
For Texas, seven players reached double digit scoring; Montrell Little led the way with 18 points.
Against 11th ranked Tarleton State University, Western nailed 30 percent of their shot (16-53), converted one three pointer (1-14) and hit 85 percent from the charity stripe (12-14). The Texanns held the advantage in shooting as they knocked down 42 percent from the field (34-80) and 29 percent from the arc (8-27), but fell short in free throws hitting 58 percent (10-17). TSU also came away with 30 points of second chance while limiting the WNMU to two.
Three Mustangs hit double digits in scoring; Spivey with 12 while McCary and Enriquez with 10 each. Spivey also managed to bring in seven rebounds and freshman Trevin Ramirez led with three assists.
Romond Jenkins for Tarleton led the team with 23 points followed by Chantz Chambers with 12.
Currently riding a nine-game losing streak, WNMU holds a 2-19 overall record and sit in last place in the Lone Star Conference with a 0-13 conference record.
The Mustangs will be back in action this Tuesday as they travel to in-state rivals Eastern New Mexico University with tipoff at 7:30 Mountain Time.
