SILVER CITY, N.M. – Coming off of a weekend that witnessed their strongest offensive game of the season against one of the top teams in the nation, the Western New Mexico University men’s basketball team will begin a four-game home stretch this weekend against Fort Lewis College and Adams State University.
First on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. will be a matchup with the FLC Skyhawks. FLC is 15-5 on the season and 10-4 in RMAC play. They hold a 4-3 mark away from Durango having dropped their last two games against MSU Denver (87-51) and Adams State (77-69).
The Skyhawks average 82.7 points per game, while allowing 76.6. They make 47.9 percent from the field and hold the opposition to a 42.6 percent effort. Center Alex Herrera remains one of the main threats in all of college basketball as the big man averages a double-double with 23.8 points and 11.2 rebounds. Not only does he lead the team in those categories, he also leads them in blocks (74), field goals (266) and free throws (171). Three other Skyhawks average in double-figures including Cade Kloster (12.6), Rasmus Bach (11.7) and Kofi Josephs (10.8).
In the earlier meeting this season FLC held off the Mustangs to claim an 86-70 victory.
The next night on Saturday also at 7:30 p.m. will be a game against Adams State. The Grizzlies are 12-6 overall and 8-6 in the RMAC and have won three straight including a big win at home against Fort Lewis this past Saturday.
ASU averages 86.9 points per game and allows 72.3. They make 51.7 percent from the field, while opposing teams hit on 42.7 percent. They are 3-4 away from Alamosa this season winning their last road game at Regis (74-60).
Four players average in double-figures led by 16.1 per game from Shakir Smith. Juwan Buchanan adds 14.1, Michael Middlebrooks at 10.8 and Travante Williams adds 10.0 per contest. Middlebrooks also leads the team in rebounds (6.1) and blocks (52) and is the reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.
ASU took the earlier meeting in Alamosa, 99-64.
WNMU (2-17, 2-13 RMAC) came through with a 91-point effort against No. 9/12 UC-Colorado Springs this past Friday. WNMU averages 63.9 points per game and allows 82.9. They make 39.3 percent from the floor and give up 49.3 percent.
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) and Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) lead the team in most categories as they go one and two in scoring with Castrillo tallying 13.1 and Scott with 12.2. Castrillo also leads in rebounds (5.6) and blocks (9). Scott leads in assists (83) and steals (29). Three other Mustangs average near eight per game including Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) (8.1), Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) (8.1) and Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) (7.8).
In terms of RMAC rankings WNMU is seventh in steals per game (5.4), ninth in both assists (11.5) and turnover margin (-0.53) and eighth in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.9). Individually Scott is third in assists (4.9), third in steals (1.7), eighth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6) and sixth in minutes played (33.4). Castrillo is ninth in defensive rebounds (4.4).
In terms of NCAA national rankings, WNMU is 59th in fewest turnovers (239) and third in the RMAC in that category, 86th in turnovers per game (12.6). Scott is 44th in the nation in assists per game, and 91st in total assists.
