Silver City, NM- Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, has a chapter in every state and has been at Western for eighty years. After ten years lying dormant the group was re-launched by Dr. Michael-Ann Nelson from the Department of Humanities in the 2013-2014 school year.
Since then, the organization has participated in 2014s Great Race, hosted movie nights both last spring and this past October and organized the film of last years “Happy” video which can still be found on Youtube.
Anyone is welcome to join Sigma Tau Delta, which offers several benefits to students, including opportunities for scholarships and internships with publishers. There is a small entrance fee of $40 but will be paid by the group themselves after participating in at least 10 hours of fund-raising projects.
Coming up for the group is their International Conference, which will be held March 18-22 in Albuquerque, NM. This conference gives the students involved a chance to attend writing workshops on publishing and developing their works as well as on the field of English. They can also hear published writers such as Simon Ortiz, Garty Soto and Leslie Marmon Silko speak. Dr. Nelson says that this conference offers students a chance to get an inside look into what English majors can do in a profession capacity, beyond what they learn in the classroom.
“Sigma Tau Delta is a fun way to connect with other students who enjoy writing and reading.” Dr. Nelson said. “In my experience, people who love to read and write are more introverted, and it can be hard to meet people who share those same interests. Sigma Tau Delta offers a forum for students to meet each other and find a community of creative individuals.”
