Tennis Returns Home to Host NMMI This Thursday

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Following a trip to Albuquerque in which weather caused the men’s tennis team to only be able to play one match and none for the women’s tennis team, WNMU returns home this Thursday to host New Mexico Military Institute at 1 p.m.

On the men’s side, the Mustangs broke out with a big regional win over nationally-ranked St. Mary’s, 5-4. WNMU is currently ranked 48th in the latest ITA rankings and defeated the Rattlers who were 39th. WNMU is 1-5 on the season and this will be their first home match of the campaign. NMMI has played just one match in which they lost to Collin College, 7-2. Tristan Da Lio (Casablanca/Academie des Hauts de Nimes) and Vladimir Gnilozubov (Kazakhstan, Astana/Kazakhstan) lead the team in singles wins with each posting two. In doubles play, Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico)/Pablo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico/CETYS Universidad) and Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes)/Santibanez have each posted a win this season.

On the women’s side, the Lady Mustangs were set to play a pair of matches in Albuquerque, but weren’t able to get any matches in. They are 2-4 on the season and have already played two matches at home against Division I Grand Canyon and Eastern Arizona. NMMI has also played just one match on the women’s side in which they collected a 5-4 win over Collin College. Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) leads the team in singles victories going 3-2 so far, in doubles play Annica Betz (Celle, Germany/Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Gymnasium)/Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227), Pauline Emin (Viry, France/Lycee Arbez Carme)/Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) and Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad)/Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) all have combined for two wins apiece to lead the way.
