Silver City, NM – Tuesday, March 3, as part of Sex Week, speakers Marshall Miller and Kaelyn Rich talked to students about the importance of safe sex. The speakers allowed students to ask questions and also handed out protective barriers, such as condoms at the presentation.

The discussion covered some important topics such as they explained why consent is a very important thing when it comes to sex , and explained how to talk to your partner about what aspects you do and do not like about sex. The speakers also talked about the different diseases you can get if you have unprotected sex with multiple different partners and how to prevent those diseases from happening by wearing condoms.

The speakers also mentioned the different birth control options for females and how they can prevent pregnancy. Marshal Miller has been speaking for 10 years he said “I like the opportunity to teach accurate information about sex. As well as make people feel more comfortable about their body and sexuality.” The students were allowed to talk to the speakers as long as they wanted after the presentation if they had questions that needed to be addressed.

Western New Mexico University Student Shelby Wilkie said “ I learned a lot from the presentation, I am from a small town where it is “hush hush” about the sex subject and I think it was a good educational thing I learned for the future.” Student Nemorio Alves mentioned “ It was very informative, they covered important subjects such as forms of protection, consent. The speakers kept the audience enjoying the presentation and made it less awkward for students. It’s really good for students to know where to go for questions.”

Student Theresa Caldwell said “ It is cool that they came to our college campus and it is awesome that they gave us answers to people’s questions.” WNMU student Chico Damasio said “I like that they answered our questions and that students know where to go now. It clarified a lot for students.”

Motivation speaker Kaelyn Rich said “I like my job because I like hearing what happening across the country about sexuality and also I think it is very important for students to be comfortable about sex .” Marshall Miller added “I hope the students walk out knowing learning about sex is a good thing whether you’re chosing to be sexually active or planning on abstaining until your married or in a commited relationship.”

Students can visit the Student Health Services located on the bottom floor of the Juan Chacon building if they have question about sex or are interested in receiving or learning about birth control. Many of the Student Health Services are free to students.
