Annual Friends of Clay Pottery Sale Celebrated 10th Anniversary

Silver City, NM- Western New Mexico University clay department’s students and faculty held it’s Tenth Annual Pottery Sale Saturday downtown. Many individuals came to buy from the variety of unique pottery students and faculty had to offer. The pottery included items such as plates, cups, bowls, vases, decorative items and much more.

The sale has been sponsored by “Friends of Clay” and the first sale took place in 2005. Claude Smith III said “This sale benefits the WNMU students because when you’re starting as a beginning student you’ve got to go through the process of making the pots and the sale gives them an opportunity to show their art and some of the best critics are the consumers.”

During the sale kids were also able to participate in a workshop and learn how to use clay. Former Western New Mexico University art student Robert Tores said “It’s nice to see local artist’s stuff and how the instructors in the clay department have an influence on the students. It’s nice to see it outside of the University.”

Clay instructors, including Jessica Wilson, had numerous pottery on sale for people to buy. Potter, Phoebe Lawrence said “I think this sale is beneficial because it gets the students into thinking how artists sell their work.” Proceeds from the Pottery Sale go towards the WNMU clay program.
