Silver City- With both teams holding their own in pitching, Western New Mexico University’s pitcher Domi Shone was able to snug by for the win over Colorado State University-Pueblo, 1-0 in game one of a doubleheader. In the second game however, CSU-Pueblo found themselves offensively and was able to come away with the win, 8-0.
In the first game, the only run that was earned by both teams came from the Mustangs in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Ariana Maldonado swung at her first pitch and drove the ball over the leftfield fence for a solo home run.
The only chance of scoring for the Thunderwolves came in the top of the second inning. Two singles and a stolen base allowed them to put runners on first and third base with one out. Shone kept her cool as she was able to retire the next two batters with a pop out and foul out.
After Maldonado’s home run inning, it was a hitless sixth and seventh inning for CSU-Pueblo as the Mustangs picked up the win, 1-0.
Both teams earned themselves three hits each. The Mustangs three hits came from Maldonado’s home run, Krystal Castillo’s double, and Mariangela Garcia’s single. For the Thunderwolves Madison Wolfe, Kennedy Smith, and Shelby Bennett drove in a hit each.
Pitching the entire game for WNMU was Shone (11-10) who only gave up three hits followed by her three strikeouts. CSU-Pueblo pitcher Hope Davalos also pitched the full game, giving up three hits and came away with three strikeouts.
In the second game, the Lady Mustangs struggled offensively as they were limited to only three hits, while the Thunderwolves brought in eight hits.
The only time WNMU came close to scoring was in the bottom of second inning but they were unable to drive home Lacy Granger who was standing on second base with no outs.
CSU-Pueblo would eventually go on and take the win, 8-0.
The Mustangs struggled defensively as they allowed five errors, while the Thunderwolves gave up only one error.
Alicia Enriquez, Castillo, and Garcia brought in the three WNMU hits.
Pitching all five innings for WNMU was MaryJo Granger (1-9) who allowed eight runs, four of those were unearned. For CSU-Pueblo, Wolfe (1-8) pitched all five innings also, giving up three runs, and earned herself two strikeouts.
Western New Mexico University softball will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Colorado to take on Fort Lewis College Saturday and Sunday for a doubleheader.
