Silver City, N.M.- One of the fifteen students contesting for a spot in the ASWNMU Senate is Western New Mexico University softball player Mariangela Garcia. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Mariangela has been awarded many honors in her softball career. Two of which include a couple RMAC Player of the Week awards and a Top-25 Freshman of the Nation award.
Mariangela is currently majoring in Nursing and plans to become a neonatal nurse and work with babies. Eventually, she would like to start off in small hospitals before working her way up to bigger hospitals in Tucson.
She admits that she is very shy and not very vocal and this is the main reason why she wanted to become part of student government. It now has allowed her to become more involved with the school and the students.
Since being a softball player, Mariangela feels that it has helped her in being a better person which could help her earn a seat in the Senate.
“[Softball] showed me be to be more organized, prioritize, and be more efficient in cooperating with people” says Mariangela.
When asked what kind of qualities as person she offers, Mariangela answered that she is well organized, capable of getting tasks done, and focuses on what needs to be focused on.
Focusing on more student involvement is one of her main priorities at WNMU. She would like to see students have fun and enjoy their college experience.
“WNMU needs to have a better atmosphere,” said Mariangela. “I would like more participation in sporting events and activities. Especially with the Great Race.”
In her closing statement on why people should vote for her, Mariangela said “I am willing to work hard and do whatever is needed of me and also to benefit the student government.”
You can vote for Mariangela and other student candidates from now until this Wednesday, April 13th through Mustang Express.
