Newsome, Mitchell Named All-RMAC Second-Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Seniors RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) and Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Second-Team as announced by the conference office Tuesday.

Newsome has been amongst the RMAC leaders in several categories including tops in assists per game (5.6) and steals per game (2.3). She is tied for fifth in three-point percentage (40), seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3) and tenth in minutes per game (32.2). Nationally she ranks 14th in assists per game and 48th in steals per game. For the season Newsome averages 9.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and has also tallied 61 steals, 145 assists, a block, 84 free throws and 65 field goals in starting all 26 games this season. Newsome scored a season-high 17 points against New Mexico Highlands and recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists against Northern New Mexico. She has reached double-figures in scoring 13 times and has dished out 10 or more assists twice this season. She posted a season-high six steals against UC-Colorado Springs. She has led or tied for the team lead in assists in all but five games this season.

Mitchell ranks high as well in a couple of RMAC categories including ninth in assists per game (2.8), 13th in points per game (13) and tied for 13th in three-pointers made per game (1.6). For the season she leads the team in points per game, while also bringing down 4.8 rebounds per contest, 74 assists, a block, 37 steals, a team-high 41 three-pointers, 86 free throws, and a team-high 105 field goals in starting all 26 games. Mitchell scored a season-high 27 points against New Mexico Highlands and has scored 20 or more four times this season. She has reached double-figures in scoring in 17 games this season. She hit a season-high four three-pointers against Colorado Christian. She has led or tied for the team lead in scoring in 13 games this season.

WNMU will open the RMAC Tournament tonight against top seed Colorado Mesa University beginning at 7 p.m.
