Silver High Girl’s Golf Wins First Ever State Title

Silver City, N.M. – For the first time in school history, the Silver High girl’s golf brought home a state championship as they were able to win at the Class A-4A New Mexico High School State Golf Championships last May in Roswell.

“We are overwhelmed with excitement”, said Assistant Head Coach Gabby Begay, who has been with the program since 2010. “I feel amazing to be a part of a state championship team. It is an honor and privilege to be able to coach these young ladies.”

All five Silver High players did well on the course as they all shot under 200 individually in the championship. Senior Rhiannon Jaramillo individually placed fifth and shot 181 while Chelsea Medina placed sixth with a 183. The three other Fighting Colts were Brooklyn Renteria with a 191, Senior Esmeralda Melendez with a 194, and Sage Begay with a 194.

“The girls were nervous but excited to play at state”, said Begay. “We didn’t put too much pressure on the girls this season but emphasized that they play their individual game.”

Overall, the Lady Colts came away with an extraordinary score of 737. Second place winner, Texico, were unable to keep pace with the Colts as they scored a 791. Coming in third place with a score of 800 was Portales.

Not only did Silver High impress in the championship but throughout the season, as they won six tournaments in the regular season, not to mention a district championship. Winning these tournaments allowed them to gain some momentum heading into the championship.

“The girl’s confidence was consistent throughout the entire season,” said Begay. “After winning several tournaments, the girl’s knew they had a chance at claiming the championship.”

The Lady Colts determination was one of the reason why they had such a successful season.

“The girls that play on the team have all the qualities you would expect from an athlete, such as: discipline, honor, integrity, and teamwork,” said Begay.

The success not only came from the players but from Head Coach James Begay, who is also her father. Begay says that he is very devoted to the program and coaches with much patience.

The community was very proud of Silver High as they were recognized throughout the county. Senator Howie Morales and county commissioners awarded them with certificates and recognition, while radio station 95.1 invited them to the morning sports show.

The Silver High girl’s golf could not have asked for a better season as they earned themselves six tournament wins, a district championship, and for the first time ever, a state title.
