Silver City, NM- Three years ago, after a few ups-and-downs and several trials, the Art Club was created at Western New Mexico University and still grows to this day.
“It has become more recognized,” Art Club Treasurer Jenny Castanon says, “it finally grew and was left with serious students with an interest in art.”
With a small of group of seven dedicated members, the club’s main goal is to achieve an extension of passion through its art.
Castanon describes it by saying, “It helps us express ourselves because we use this form of expression by visually connecting with others. Art is a part of us where we have control in what we provide to our community.”
President of the Art Club is Atziry Apodaca, but Castanon says that there are no important roles in the club since they are a small group. Therefore, all members have a significant part.
The club is advised by Assistant Professor in Ceramics Jessica Wilson, Assistant Professor in Photography Jim Pendergast, and Assistant Professor in Painting and Drawing John Abott. They are responsible for making sure the club follows through on whatever plans they make.
Any WNMU student can join the club even if they aren’t majoring or minoring in Arts, however they do at least have to have an interest in the subject. They can join by contacting one of the advisers who can be found in either the McCray or Chino building.
One of the clubs upcoming events is a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) show on April 8th, which is an art show for the club members that will be graduating this year. Also, the club is currently in discussion about a community service project using its art or form of creativity.
“We hope that more members will be interested because we all try to support each other and it is worth joining!” said Castanon.
Art Club meetings are typically held in the Chino building on Fridays depending on the member’s schedule.
