Silver City NM- This week brought on another group of Mexican exchange students to WNMU, this time from the state of Sinaloa. Aside from taking the intensive English course offered by the WNMU Language Institute, the students will also be studying a bit more than learning the language, taking only one week of English classes and will spend the next week applying their skills during a course in International Business.
The Universidad de Occidente, or the University of the West, has dedicated itself to creating strong entrepreneurs with a vision of helping local communities thrive. “Your university is very similar to ours in that it is rural, growing, and aspiring to be a leader in community development,” said Professor Karla Moreno. Each student selected is involved in a two-year master program in which one of the requirements is travelling abroad.
UdeO, out of Los Mochis Mexico is here because of a memorandum of understanding signed in October of last year. The group of 16 is the first of many to be registered for classes in English and International Business here at WNMU.
The goal of this university is to prepare their students for international managerial positions. By doing this, they aspire to help the surrounding communities develop, beginning with their own. This program was set into motion last October, with an agreement being signed by both WNMU and U de O. “English is the universal language of business, and it is important that our students understand that,” said Andres Ayala German, Director de Unided el Fuerte.
The group is said to conclude their studies next Friday, and has every intention of pursuing more collaborations with Western New Mexico University in the future.
Teaching the International Business portion of the class is visiting Instructor Luis Alberto Villalobos Alvarez from UACJ. Alvarez is a recent graduate of the Language Institutes Intensive English Program.
