Women’s Tennis Downs San Diego Christian, Faces Top-Ranked Pirates

The Western New Mexico University women’s tennis team wrapped up spring break with two matches in California against San Diego Christian and Armstrong Atlantic State.

In the first match against San Diego Christian, the Lady Mustangs collected a 7-2 victory. In doubles, Pauline Emin (Viry, France/Lycee Arbez Carme)/Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) dominated at No. 3 cruising to an 8-1 victory. Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) added the second point in doubles at No. 2 coming away with an 8-5 victory. At the top flight, Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227)/Annica Betz (Celle, Germany/Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Gymnasium) won six games before falling, 6-8.

In singles, Tiurina had no trouble with her match at the top flight dropping just one game before posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Morrill added a similar result at No. 6 coming away with the same score of 6-1, 6-0. Emin lost only two games in her first set at No. 5 coming away with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Betz at No. 2 and Osuna at No. 4 had similar scores in winning each of their matches. Betz tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win and then Osuna came away with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) at No. 3 won five total games before a 3-6, 2-6 setback.

To conclude the weekend, WNMU faced top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State and were defeated, 9-0. In doubles, Tiurina/Betz won three games at the top flight before a 3-8 setback. Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/Morrill at No. 2, along with Osuna/Emin at No. 3 fell by the same scores of 0-8.

In singles, Tiurina came away with two games in each set before falling at the top flight, 2-6, 2-6. Betz at No. 2 and Osuna at No. 4 each won a game in their matches. Betz dropped her match, 0-6, 1-6, while Osuna fell, 1-6, 0-6. Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) at No. 3, Emin at No. 5 and Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) at No. 6 all were defeated by the same scores of 0-6, 0-6.

Following the 1-1 week, the Lady Mustangs are now 5-9 on the season. They will return to action this Thursday when they will travel to El Paso, Texas to face the University of Texas-Pan American at 11 a.m., before concluding the day against the University of Texas-El Paso at 4 p.m.
