Silver City, NM- WNMU Student Life will be taking control of all clubs and organizations starting this Fall. Student Life presented the Associated Students of Western New Mexico University with a pitch on how clubs would benefit with a paid professional at the helm. According to Tim Stillman, the ASWNMU Treasurer and Chair of the Clubs Committee, student government was very impressed with their pitch.
Clubs will of course still be crewed by students and advised by a faculty or staff advisor, but Student Life plans to implement many changes in the requirements for clubs. Both advisors and club members will be required to attend mandatory leadership trainings and all clubs will be required to participate in the beginning of the semester orientation events as well as the usual Great Race and Homecoming weeks. Clubs will also be required to maintain a minimum of ten office hours within the P.E. building. The goal of the changes is to raise awareness for the assorted clubs on campus and increase membership.
The new constitution that Student Life has prepared for clubs in the Fall semester is still under development. A new committee is also being planned to oversee clubs that will include representatives of both student government and student life.
