Silver City, NM- The walls of the university’s campus echoed with the motivational chanting of courage of students, faculty and staff on a mission to take back the night. “Take Back the Night” is an international event and non-profit organization created to cease sexual violence and bring a support group for victims of such. Participants marched from both the Centennial and Mustang Village dorms to the Fine Arts Theater where the presentation was held.
The event was put together by the Center for Gender Equity and Social Justice and with the help of very important guests such as Silver Regional Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) and PFLAG, a nonprofit queer support organization. Throughout the event, guest speakers brought awareness to the problem of sexual violence and gave advice on what to do in certain situations were sexual assault is most likely to happen. Some of them even spoke from personal experience.
During the event, a jar of confessions was placed at the front of the stage and the confessions were then read by members of the Public Speaking classes. The event also included informational booths from the three parties, coffee and snacks were provided for participants by the Javalina Cafe, a kid’s table, and a wall of confessions, each featuring the hashtag, “me too.”
