Deming, NM- Sydnor Prieto, of Deming NM, was one three students from Western New Mexico University’s Adult Education Program recently honored as Outstanding Student of the Year. This annual award is sponsored by the New Mexico Adult Education Association in recognition of outstanding academic achievement towards attaining the High School Equivalency diploma. Martha Weaver, also of Deming NM, is currently enrolled in the HSE program and was a recent, past recipient of the same award.
William Hladky, a WNMU Adjunct Professor and instructor in the Adult Education Service program stated that both Sydnor and Martha have overcome tremendous barriers, some of which forced them to abandon the traditional high school path. Though these barriers at times seemed insurmountable, these students sought alternative means of achieving their education goal through WNMU’s HSE program.
Hladky credited the students near perfect attendance, active class participation, and preparation for the subject matter being studied as key factors to their success.
“These traits along with a personalized study plan and a peer group that was goal driven, ensured not only Sydnor and Martha ‘s success, but any student that is willing to put forth the effort,” Hladky explained.
The High School Equivalency program in Deming, NM is combination of hybrid-learning and a personalized, goal-oriented study program where each student progresses at their own pace.
