The National Society of Leadership and Success is a program for members to build their leadership skills through participation on campus or online. The university selects students for membership based on either academic standing or leadership potential. According to the NSLS website, “NSLS is the nation’s largest leadership honor society. Candidacy is a nationally recognized achievement of honorable distinction. With 699 chapters, the NSLS currently has 1,138,791 members nationwide.” WNMU established an NSLS chapter in 2017.
The student executive board members are:
- Jenesa Mpiga-Tsiba is the Student President.
- Kassandra Segura is the Student Vice President.
- Laura Black is the Publicity Chair.
- Victoria Prejean is the Membership Outreach Chair.
- Jessica Morales and Ashely Templeton are advisors for NSLS.
The Mustang Staff met with Jenesa Mpiga-Tsiba, to get more information on the National Society of Leadership and Success.
Q: What is NSLS?
A: It is the National Society of Leadership and Success. They have them in universities all over the country. It is just a way of teaching students how to be leaders and how to be successful after they graduate. It is an honor society. There are lots of benefits to it. They offer scholarships to students who are involved. Students also get to watch live speaker broadcasts of leaders, usually celebrities. We want to get more students involved in this project!
Q: Do you have any future fundraising or events?
We are having a Valentine’s Day fundraiser. The NSLS members are going to be selling candy grams on campus. They will be one or two dollars. Some candies will be sweetarts, and candy rings pop. We host events each semester. We do community service events. We have a social, or we get together and do something fun!
Q: Are there any requirements to be a part of NSLS?
A: It is an Honor Society, so they have to meet a GPA of 2.8. NSLS is by invitation. This semester, invitations were already sent out. There were three hundred and seventy-one invitations sent out to students. If you are not invited, you can still apply to their website. To get an invitation, you have to get three letters of recommendation from professors or anyone. Then, NSLS will review your profile and will send out the invitation. You can still join the society! The deadline to apply for an invitation is February 18th. You can be a member; however, if you want to be an inducted member, and open up more of the benefits, there are specific steps that they have to take. They have to go to the orientation. We have a Leadership Training Day and a Success Networking Team (SNT) meeting. This is all to get together with your group and talk about personal goals that you have, how to achieve them, what obstacles you’ll have to overcome, and how to be successful. We host all these events throughout the semester. Then, we have an induction ceremony. A student will master this as long as they’ve done all the steps to be inducted.
Q: Why should students join the National Society of Leadership and Success?
A: If I’m honest, the reason a lot of people say to join is that it looks good on their resume. That’s what I did! My brother said, “you should be a part of it,” but it’s more than what I realized. For me, joining the executive board helped me improve in many ways. I used to have anxiety when it came to public speaking. It has gotten better. You learn skills that will put you above the other people when you’re going to apply for jobs. After the experiences you gain, you will be one step above other people that are applying to have those leadership skills. I think it is enormous and that’s what employers look for, especially if you stay in the same position. No one wants to stay in the same position in a job for a lifetime. You want to be able to grow, and I think the society definitely puts you in the right position to be able to improve yourself with any career that you’re going into after you graduate.
