Silver City, NM- On the heels of Black History Month coming to a close in 2017, and an entire month of events being held around campus, WNMU has officially launched a Black Student Union on campus. This organization is open for the general student population to join, but its main focus is on students that are African-American. Led by Student Life, the advisors are Isaac Brundage, Katherine Warren, and Dezmond Wheeler.
Brundage kicked off the event by giving a small speech as to why this up and coming organization was being brought together. He mentioned that the BSU was not only for students to have fun and throw parties, but to educate others about a culture that they might not know too much about, and getting their name out there by hosting unique events around campus. Brundage also mentioned that in Santa Fe during the legislation days he was there, they held a day celebrating African-American people in New Mexico. By having the Black Student Union start off, Brundage hopes to see students bring something new to campus that both he and Dezmond Wheeler believed were lacking at WNMU, especially for African-American students.
There are currently no officers at the moment, but the advisors are encouraging students to fill these positions as soon as possible. There are openings for President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Relations.
The event was held on the third floor of the SMB and had plenty of great soul food like fried chicken, mac and cheese, gumbo, and peach cobbler.
Now that there is this new organization on campus for students to join, there is plenty of room for it to show what it can offer to the ever-expanding and wide-ranging culture of students at WNMU.
