Driscol Tied for First; Women’s Golf a Stroke Back at RMAC Championships

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Senior Mary Driscol (Glendale, AZ/Kellis HS) utilized a three-under 69 to tie for first, as the Western New Mexico University women’s golf team is just a stroke back in second after the opening round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships took place Monday at the par 72, 5,881 yard Coldwater Golf Course.

The Lady Mustangs carded a 302 to land in second, just a stroke back of Metro State in first with a 301. WNMU is also six-shots clear of Colorado State University-Pueblo in third. Individually, Driscol is tied with Hee-Leina Kim from CSU-Pueblo as both carded 69’s.

Driscol posted five birdies, with three coming on the back-nine. She had five birdies which tied for the first round high and was also near the top in most of the par scoring categories. She is tied for first in both par-four (4.00) and par-five (4.25) scoring, while she is tied for fourth in par-three (3.00). Sophomore Bobbi Pierson (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) wasn’t far behind as she took advantage of the only eagle on the day coming on the par-five, sixth hole. She also added a birdie on the back-nine to finish with a 72 and into a tie for third. The RMAC women’s golf Summit Award winner tied teammate Driscol for the top par-five scoring (4.25). She was also tied for sixth in par-four (4.20) and tied for second in pars (13). Junior Cheyenne Molina (Deming, NM/Deming HS) was near the top-10 posting a 78 to tie for 14th. Her 12 pars were tied for fourth-most and she was in the top-10 in par-four scoring (4.30) tying for ninth. Sophomore Adrianna Grijalva (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood HS) is in a tie for 32nd with an 83. She was near the top in terms of par-three scoring (3.00) where she was in the top-five. Rounding out the top five for the Lady Mustangs was redshirt freshman Jessica Henderson (Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo HS) as she is tied for 42nd with an 87 as she recorded six pars.

The second and final round of the RMAC Championships will begin on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (Pacific Time).
