Glam Week: Get Your Freak On

Silver City, N.M. – Glam Week continued at Western New Mexico University as “Get Your Freak On” Drag Show was presented at Light Hall on Wednesday Night.

Just like last year, the event let students and faculty show of their dance moves as they lip synched to a song. The following judges decided the winner: Delise Carlos, Mark Coleman (Director of Athletics), Matthew Lara (Interim Director), Chris Matthews, Ron Reed (Facility Supervisor), and Kathrine Warren (Student Activities Coordinator/Hall Director).

Donald Trump, portrayed by Ward Rudick, came up on stage to host the event. Once the booing had settled down, Summer Osborne showed up as another host so Trump wouldn’t ruin the show.

After a few racist jokes from Trump, the show was underway. First up to perform was Professor Lydia Huerta, who danced to La Bicicleta by Carlos Vives and Shakira. The performance was based on the actual music video of La Bicileta with Professor Huerta dressing up as Carlos Vives with a wig. Afterwards, the judges made a few comments: “Rhythm was on point” but “Back up dancers kind of stole the show”.

Next to perform was Icee Tight who sung to Demi Lovato’s Cool For the Summer. She danced and showed off some X-rated moves that got the crowd hyped. “I got sweaty” said one judge commenting on her moves. Halfway through her show, there was a stumble but she kept her cool and went on like nothing happened.

Following next was Jazmin Hernandez as she performed The Real Slim Shady by Eminem. Jazmin was dressed in an all-black hoodie with the hood on just like Eminem. “So all the real Slim Shadys please stand up” went the lyrics to the song and, so of course, other Slim Shadys appeared on stage. “Thursday Throwback”, said one judge.

Summer Osborne came on stage next and sang Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling. Just like Timberlake in his music video, Summer emulated his exact clothing and slick moves. The crowd was really impressed as they danced with her. The judges had a few things to say of the performance: “You came out with a Nike sweat suit and you had me”, “Swagger was turned up”, and “I hope you teach me some dance lessons.”

Next performance came from Miguel Gutierrez who performed Beyoncé’s Formation. Miguel threw down some moves just like Beyoncé, which impressed the crowd. At one point during his performance, an audience member threw a bra on stage. “Queen B would be proud”, “I have always wanted to go to a Beyoncé concert, but now I don’t have too”, and “I still have chills” were some comments by the judges.

The final act came from Debby Falcon. She played Jennifer Lopez’s Dance Again and Selena’s Como la Flor. During Dance Again, Debby stripped off one article of clothing at a time, revealing another costume. Then, when performing Como la Flor, Debby went off stage and about half of the audience came to join and dance with her.

After the crowd finally got back to their seats, the judges had to make a final decision. Miguel’s performance took the crown and the crowd was very pleased with the decision.

Glam Week finished off the week with its final event on Thursday at 7 pm with the Latin Alternative band “Las Cafeteras” performing at Light Hall Theater.
