Guillermo Palacios es un nuevo individuo a la familia de Western New México Universito. Es nacido en Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, pero fue criado en Albuquerque, Nuevo México. Palacios forma parte del grupo de Mariachi Plata donde toca el violín. También es un miembro activo de MEChA.
Le hicimos unas preguntas a Guillermo para conocerlo mejor:
P: ¿Que es la asociación de MEChA? ¿Me podrías contar más de lo que hacen?
R: MEChA significa Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán. Este es el primer semestre que formó parte del grupo de MEChA de WNMU, pero participé en mi escuela anterior. Allí también tenían un grupo de MEChA y era un miembro activo desde mi primer año de preparatoria. Allí aprendí e hice mucho trabajo comunitario. Lo que el grupo se enfoca es darle una voz a la raza. My vision of this group is giving the voice to those minority groups. We are in favor of Human Rights Movements and other peaceful protests that fall under that category. We want to stop racism and give a voice to all the people who unfortunately do not have that voice to empower them. The goal here in the WNMU community is to get us out there and help the Raza! ¡Todos pueden formar parte del de Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán!
P: ¿Que significa para ti ser un hispano?
R: Being Hispanic for me is a label because I feel like it is just one part of my identity. It’s only one part of who I am. From being an immigrant, Mexican American, and Hispanic, I feel it gives me power. It gives me a voice that a lot of people, unfortunately, do not have. I feel I am a blend of just different cultures, traditions, and slightly other things that make me unique and make me very special as it should be. To me, being Hispanic, is having that Mexican root in me but also having that American root in me. It means a lot.
P: ¿Qué tan importante es la educación en tu familia?
R: Desde chico, tener buenas calificaciones era muy importante para mis padres. Mi mama era más atenta a que yo me enfocara más en la escuela. La escuela para mí siempre ha sido muy importante porque la meta del sueño americano que mis padres tenían para mí era que yo tuviera un mejor futuro. Ellos no tuvieron la oportunidad de ir a la escuela. Entonces para venir aquí a los Estados Unidos siempre me decían que yo debía tener una carrera y ser algo mejor que ellos. If they could not accomplish that American dream, I will be able to do it all through education. This is why I studied very hard and always wanted the good grades. My mom was always so strict on me having good grades. Education has always been super important.
P: ¡Cuéntame un hecho interesante de tu país!
R: ¡México! Mexico is very culturally based. It is known for that. I think Mariachi is one of the most beautiful things in Mexico. I think it gives a physical and emotional representation of what Mexico is. Mariachi music interprets the voice of every Mexican and everyone who understands the music. This music was passed on from generation through generation. I feel like that is Mexico.
P: ¿Algo más que quisieras agregar a tu articulo?
I want to add that everyone, please go vote. Give that vote for everyone who cannot vote. Give people like me, who unfortunately do not have that voice and that right to vote, the voice I need to vote. I also have a goal that MEChA will become a fantastic organization here at WNMU, and the support from everyone would be outstanding. We are here for the Raza! We are Raza!
