Silver City, NM-The Lady Mustangs had an exhilarating match against Eastern Arizona on Wednesday in their second home match hosted on the WNMU tennis courts. The Lady Mustangs came out on top 8-1, but not without some hassle from the visiting Gila Monsters.
For doubles play, all three pairs won their matches. At No. 3 doubles, Tiffany Newell and Karina Diaz won the easiest against the Gila Monsters at 8-3. For the No. 2 pair, Emma Siboni and Nadia Justiniano fought to win their set 9-7. And for the No. 1 doubles, Gemma Goodland and Annely Heinze, they were challenged by their opponent’s serve, but ultimately came out on top with a score of 8-4.
With the Lady Mustangs up 3-0 in match play, their singles were a breeze to get through, with only one of the girls retiring from her match. At No. 6, Nadia Justiniano won her match 6-2, 6-1. No. 5 Karina Diaz took her match 6-2, 6-2. No. 4 Emma Siboni and No. 3 Gemma Goodland both won their matches with the same scores of 6-3, 6-0. No. 2 Annely Heinze retired in her second set, 0-3 after losing the first one in a tiebreaker which was 6-7.
Both of the men and women’s teams for the Mustangs will head to Grand Canyon University, a Division I school, on Feb. 15.
