Men’s Basketball to Close Season at Home Against Cowboys

SILVER CITY, N.M. – It will be senior day for both Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) and Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) as the Western New Mexico University men’s basketball team closes the regular season on Saturday against in-state rival New Mexico Highlands.

The Mustangs are 2-23 overall and 2-19 in the RMAC. Scott powers the offense with 13.3 points per game, while Castrillo adds 12.3 per contest. Scott also leads the team in assists (112) and steals (37). Castrillo leads in overall rebounds (121) and blocks (11). The Mustangs average 63.7 points per game while allowing 82.3. They make 39.6 percent from the field, while opponents connect on 50.2.

Nationally WNMU ranks 63rd in the nation for fewest turnovers (309), good for fourth in the conference and 77th in turnovers per game (12.4), good for fifth in the conference. Scott is 47th in the NCAA in assists per game (4.9), which is fourth in the conference. He is also 64th in the nation in total assists (112), which is also fourth in the conference.

In terms of RMAC only stats, Scott is fourth in steals per game (1.6), eighth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8) and fifth in minutes played per game (33.2).

The Cowboys won the earlier meeting in Las Vegas, 92-69.

NMHU is 5-20 overall and 5-16 in the RMAC and are 1-12 away from home. Their one RMAC road victory came against Western State (77-68). They have lost seven of their last eight with their win during that time coming against Western State at home.

Jonathon Mines leads the way with 18.4 points per game. Kendrick Nichols (16.9) and Ricky Norris (12.1) all average in double-figures. Norris pulls down a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game. NMHU averages 73.4 points per game, while allowing 85.2. They make 41.1 percent from the field, while opponents make 48 percent.
