Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Slate at Division I Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Division I opponent Grand Canyon University awaits the Western New Mexico University men’s tennis team when they being the 2015 spring schedule this Saturday at 12 p.m.

The Lopes have already played two matches toward the end of January falling to both UC Davis (5-2) and Loyola Marymount (7-0). GCU will play Utah State this Friday before playing WNMU the following day.

The Lopes went 11-8 last year and had four players win at least 12 singles matches, with one posting 13. Adrian Legarreta and Alexander Roggenkamp both return this season after each tallied 12 wins apiece. Roggenkamp and Benjamin Collomb were the top doubles duo with 11 wins, as Collomb graduated this past season.

WNMU and GCU last played in 2012-13 with the Lopes claiming a 6-3 victory.

The Mustangs return three players that won at least 10 singles matches a season ago with Sascha Brechtel (Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany/Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim ), Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain) and Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes) all posting 10 wins. In doubles play, Nunez claimed 10 doubles wins with Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil/Centro Educational Sigma ). Juan Pablo Fuentes (Guadalajara, Mexico) added eight, Pageault tallied 12, Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico) collected seven and Brechtel posted seven.

WNMU will be on the road for the first month of the season playing six other matches after this one against Grand Canyon before a home match on Mar. 5 against New Mexico Military Institute.
