Pandora Scooter performs “I am Enough” at WNMU to Aid in Suicide Prevention

Silver City, NM – Tuesday March 24, the Center for Gender Equity hosted well known speaker Pandora Scooter. Pandora performed to students and Silver City community members, her show ” I Am Enough”, where she plays Pan, a woman who is trying to fight the struggle of rejection of her family and friends for her being unique and gay.

The performance plot gives an insight on the real struggles that happen to multiple people today. In the story Pan attempts to commit suicide but instead survived and is sent to a hospital. There a counselor helps motivate her and Pan decides her life is worth living. The performance had audience connection but also had a Broadway feel. Every time Pandora would act out as the character of the counselor she would break into a joyous Broadway tune.

The performance gave the audience a unique educational insight of how to survive the struggles that may lead to suicide. Pandora gave the audience each a tiny box with a mirror inside of it where students can look at and see themselves a person that is “Enough”. Pandora Scooter said “The reason I do these performances is because when I found out how high the suicide rate is I found it unacceptable and that we need to change that. I want my story to help others and prevent suicide. I think that is what is worth coming out. Everyone we have met in Silver City has been nice and friendly to us.” Pandora is touring around the country to perform ” I Am Enough.”

Western New Mexico University Student Marilynn Grijalva said ” We had a huge student turn out and it showed students how to take a look at themselves. It was emotional, inspiring, and brought to light issues that youth faces. It taught students how to handle [similar] situations, even if you live a negative life you can still become a positive person.”

WNMU Professor Lydia Huerta added ” It was awesome, and it was important because it touched issues that are very important without being pedantic about it.” For more information about Pandora Scooter’s tour, her website is pandorascooter.com.
