Silver City, NM- The Western New Mexico University English Honor’s Society Sigma Tau Delta hosted a trivia night focused around the beloved HBO series Game of Thrones. Seven WNMU students participated in the event and prizes for third, second and first place included a pair of Funko Pop dolls, the complete first season on DVD and the first six books of the series in which the show is based on. There was a $5 buy-in for students to participate in fourteen rounds of trivia. Students eliminated had to option to buy back in for an additional $5. Sigma Tau President Vincente Partido said that the event was held in order to capitalize on the hype surrounding the recently concluded seventh season of the hit HBO series. Club member Rebekah Zuniga said that she thought the event would be something fun for the students to do.
Game of Thrones is based off of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, which launched in 1996 and is currently made up of six books, with two additional novels on the way. Aside from traditional high fantasy elements such as knights, dragons and magic, the series is also notorious for it’s sex and violence. A television adaptation launched in 2011 starring Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington on HBO. The series recently wrapped up it’s penultimate seventh season with the eight kicking off sometime in the future.
Partido stated that the club may have plans to do a second trivia night next semester, this one centered around the decidedly tamer Harry Potter series.
