SILVER CITY, N.M. – With the threat of inclement weather this weekend, the Western New Mexico University softball team will face Adams State University this Friday and Saturday, instead of Saturday and Sunday.
WNMU went 1-3 this past weekend to open RMAC play claiming an 18-10 win over Chadron State. The Lady Mustangs are 4-11 overall on the season and 1-3 in the conference. Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) leads the team with a .480 batting average, while Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) (.400) is also hitting at least .400. Five other Lady Mustangs are hitting over .300 including Thailyza Ramirez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) (.378), Mary Othon (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) (.364), Stephanie Higgins (Escondido, CA/Mission Hills High School) (.340), Davi Martin (Silver City, NM/Silver City) (.325) and Alicia Enriquez (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite) (.302). Higgins leads the team in home runs (4) and RBI (17). WNMU is batting .312 as a team, while opponents are hitting .371.
In the circle, MaryJo Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) leads the team in ERA (7.59), appearances (13), games started (5), innings pitched (42.2) and is 1-4 overall. Chantel Purcella (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) leads the way in wins with three going 3-0. WNMU has a 9.90 team ERA, while opponents hold a 7.11 ERA.
ASU is 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC after only being able to get two games in this past weekend against UC-Colorado Springs. The Lady Grizzlies won the first game, 7-1, and then lost the second in eight innings, 13-10. ASU is hitting .280 and opponents are hitting .322. Five players are hitting at least .300 led by Kalin Johnson who is hitting .526. Gabrielle Griego leads in home runs with two, while Griego, Erika Ecsedy and Erica Haugum have five RBI each to lead the way.
In the circle, the Lady Grizzlies have a 5.96 ERA, while opponents have held them to a 2.50 ERA. Lauren Murphy leads the way with a 1.91 ERA. Kelsey Sellers leads in wins with 2 and holds a 2.55 ERA in 24.2 innings.
ASU took all four meeting last year with two coming in Bloomfield. A pair of the games came down to the wire with the Lady Grizzlies holding on for two, one-run victories.
