Spring

Student Wellness: Spring Vibes

It’s almost here! Just one more week and we’re all free from school and work (unless you’re one of those poor souls working off-campus!) Once we hit Spring Break, we will officially be in the middle of the spring semester, so give yourself a pat on the back: you’re halfway there!

Spring Break is the time to take a break and not worry about the issues you may be facing in school or at work. You’ve worked very hard to get to where you are, and you deserve some time off to enjoy your friends and family, and have some adventures! So whether you’re going out of town or staying home, put those books away, and get those school and work stressors out of your mind. It’s time for all of us to sit back, relax, and enjoy life! At work and school you probably sat down at a desk, maybe for hours on a daily basis. During break, get out there and do some fun activities. Go swimming, hiking, play volleyball, go dancing, just do something that gets your body going!

For some of you, you’re almost done with your degree and you just have the last lap to go! Take this break as a time to recuperate and get back some energy so you can finish strong! It can be hard to kick that “senioritis,” so take this time to get re-energized!

However, just because it’s time for you to have fun, keep in mind that you also need to be safe. If you’re going to the beach or a resort, remember, wear your sunscreen, those UV rays are deadly! Bring an umbrella, a towel, and most importantly, make sure you’re hydrating. Drink at least one bottle of water a day, especially if you’re planning on being in the sun all day. If you’re going to partake in sexual activity, wear a condom. If you know you’re planning on having sex, keep a condom with so you know you have it.

If you’re planning on having a few drinks be on the lookout! Never leave your drink at the table; someone may want to spike your drink, which could lead to negative consequences. I know it can be hard to accept a free drink, but always avoid accepting a drink from a stranger, you never know what could be in the drink. If you don’t feel safe, you have the choice to leave. Come up with a safe word as a group with your friends you are planning on going out with. If any of you use that safe word, then it’s time to leave. If you are assaulted, call for help. Contact the local police department, or security around the area, they will get you the help you need.

If you’re going on a road trip, make sure your car is in great shape. It’s always a good idea to get it checked out. You don’t want to find yourself in the middle of nowhere with no cell phone reception! If you’re planning on staying in a hotel, stay somewhere close to where you’re planning on spending time. This way you don’t need to walk very far or drive, especially if you plan on drinking. Remember to always bring in your belongings from your car and lock it when you’re done, and never open your room door to strangers. If you can, try to stay in a room that is not on the first floor, as those can be easier accessed by someone trying to break in. If you have valuable belongings like a laptop or jewelry, place them in the safe instead of leaving them in plain sight. Also, NEVER give a stranger your hotel and room information, as it makes it easier for them to find you. If you plan on going out, make sure you tell someone so they know exactly where you are. Also, make sure to bring your ID, and don’t try to carry too much money on you. Be wary of the information you post on your social media page, too much information can put you in danger.

Temptations are extremely present during Spring Break, and you may be tempted to partake in activities you don’t usually partake in. Before taking the plunge, stop and think. Take the time to really think about the consequences and UNDERSTAND how they can affect your future. It’s great to live in the moment, but one moment can change the outcome of your life. Most of you are still young, and have many years ahead of you. Don’t ruin it all for one night of fun. It’s important to have fun and enjoy yourself, but it’s also important to protect yourself.

We sometimes forget to take a break from the stresses and responsibilities of life, so take advantage of this time you do have. After all, this break is mandatory!

The Mustang hopes that all students break a leg on their midterms, and to have a fun, enjoyable and safe spring break!
