Santa Fe, NM- A special session for the New Mexico House of Representatives was held on Wednesday, May 24. Among the topics on the agenda was funding for both the New Mexico Legislature and in-state universities. Funding for both had been vetoed by Governor Susanna Martinez earlier this year.
After presenting an updated budget proposal to the Governor for the coming 2018 fiscal year, which starts July 1st, 2017 and will conclude in June 2018. The session has recessed for the holiday weekend, with many representatives returning home for Memorial Day weekend. The session is to resume next week on Tuesday afternoon, giving the Governor the next four days to mull over the new budget.
According to KOB 4 News out of Albuquerque, Governor Martinez was pleased with how the House has balanced the new budget for the next fiscal year, releasing a statement on Thursday morning expressing pleasure that they’d come an agreement on the state budget. She is also confident that funding will be restored to higher education though Governor Martinez is standing by her plans to veto any tax increases she deems unnecessary.
The state sessions will resume on Tuesday, May 30.
