Student President Begay- Honored to become the New Student Regent Board Member of WNMU

Silver City, NM- Ever since she first began at WNMU in 2009, Gabby Begay has earned a Bachelors of Applied Sciences as well as serving in the student government, first as Senator and then Vice President, before eventually claiming the title President of the Associated Students of Western New Mexico University. Now Begay can add a new honor to her long list of achievements- Student Regent for Western New Mexico University.

Though still a student, Begay will join the other members of the Board of Regents of Western in handling the affairs of the University. “Management and Control are vested in the regents.” Begay said, quoting the Boards policy manual. Begay promised, “I will serve in this position to the best of my ability and give 110% at all times. I will always be attentive and diligent when making decisions about the institution.”

Begay, a legacy at Western, with both parents graduating from the university, said that she was overwhelmed with emotions upon receiving the appointment, calling it a prestigious honor. She also expressed gratitude toward everyone who had helped her along the way. “My parents raised me to work hard, to get an education, to help people, and to follow my dreams. I‘ve had many people invest their time, love, and guidance to allow me to be where I am at today. I am forever grateful to my parents, sisters, grandparents, family, and friends for helping me along this journey.”

After graduating, Begay wishes to attend law school and hopes to pursue a career in tribal law or in state government. For now though, Begay seems more than happy continuing to be a valued part of Western New Mexico University, in her position as President of the Student Body and stepping into the role as Student Regent for Western New Mexico University. On March 24, Begay participated in her first Regents Board meeting. “WNMU is near and dear to my heart. It has been a privilege to be a part of the WNMU family and to continue to do so in my new capacity as Student Regent is a tremendous honor.”
